Monstrous Good Fun!

If you have read my book, The Real Men in Black, you will have seen some of the excellent artwork of a Welshman named Simon Wyatt contained within its pages. Specifically, the drawings of two Men in Black and of the legendary Mothman of Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

And the good news is that Simon has a brand new graphic-novel out right now, titled Unbelievable: The Man Who Ate Daffodils. So, with that said, what is Simon's book all about?

Well, I'll tell you! And probably the best way for me to do that is by including here the Foreword I wrote for Simon's book, and which reads as follows:

"Not only is Simon Wyatt a highly-skilled artist and a gifted story-teller with a fine imagination, he's also a mate. And so, when Simon asked me if I would be willing to write a foreword for his latest mighty, monstrous tome, my answer was a quick and enthusiastic 'Yes!'

"So, after a copy of the manuscript made its way across the Atlantic to my home in Dallas, Texas, I sat down on what was an appropriately dark, stormy and windswept night to read Simon's story. And, I'm very pleased that I did!

"Simon has skilfully weaved together a swirling tale of magical, Gothic, cryptozoological and sinister proportions that rather reminds me of a perfect combination of those classic old Hammer horror-films of the late 1950s and 1960s; The Hound of the Baskervilles; Primeval; Scooby-Doo; The Secret Seven; and a good old adventure tale of the type that are sorely missed today. And all told in Simon's own unique style and brand, too, of course.

"Hideous killer-beasts roaming around the darkened, shadowy streets of a small Welsh town; creepy and eccentric characters with black secrets and hidden agendas; a few adventurous kids who are at the heart of the puzzle; fantastic myths and tales of centuries past; and much more all combine to create a suspense-filled story that will appeal to anyone and everyone with an appreciation of all-things weird and ominously atmospheric.

"Part-detective story, part-monster hunt, and part-whodunit, the story Simon tells will keep you entertained right up to (and including, of course!) the absolute last page.

"And the very good news is that more volumes - and more dark goings-on - are destined to follow! Keep 'em coming, Si!"

And, if that has caught your attention (and hopefully it has!), here's a bunch of links where you can find more about Simon's work, his new book, Unbelievable, and how and where to purchase your very own copies.

MIB 3

Over at his Silver Screen Saucers blog, Robbie Graham alerts us to the trailer for the third installment in the Men in Black movie series, which is due for release next year.

Here's the link.

MIB/Gorightly in UFO Mag

The new issue of UFO Magazine (Vol. 24, No. 4, #157) includes an excellent article from Adam Gorightly on the Men in Black enigma.

Its title: A Carnival Barker for the MIBs?

This is a first-class paper that gets to the heart of the MIB puzzle as it relates to the Trickster element of the legendary Gray Barker (of They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers infamy).

For anyone wanting to learn about Barker's role in nurturing certain aspects of MIB mythology (and reality, too), Adam's feature is essential reading!

The above photo of Adam was taken by me when we hung out for a few days in the California desert, in and around the vicinity of George Van Tassel's famous Integratron, about a year ago.

Don't let Adam's cheerful smile lull you into a false sense of security. If ever there was a MIB in disguise, it's surely Adam...

Hanging on the Telephone

Without doubt, one of the most regularly reported aspects of Men in Black phenomena is that of so-called "telephone-interference." For decades, numerous witnesses to UFO activity, as well as investigators of the subject, have experienced this particularly weird intrusion.

Strange noises, robotic voices, and electronic bleeps are all part and parcel of the telephone-interference enigma.

And, you can find out more about this MIB-themed mystery at a new Mysterious Universe post on the subject from good mate Micah Hanks.

Here's where it gets even weirder.

A few days ago, while he was in the process of writing the article, Micah emailed me and asked if I had ever experienced classic telephone-interference. I replied that, no, I had not.

Maybe I spoke too soon...

Last night, from 7PM to 8PM I was recorded for an episode of Dr. Rita Louise's Just Energy Radio show on the subject of my book, The Real Men in Black.

Here's the link to Rita's show, and keep a look-out for the interview with me, which should be airing very soon.

Anyway, during the course of the interview, we discussed numerous MIB-based topics, such as the curious saga of Albert Bender, the MIB experiences of author Marie D. Jones that I relate in The Real Men in Black, and the paranormal aspects of the MIB mystery.

When we got to the section of the interview about telephone interference, however, all hell broke loose.

Rita told me she could hear weird noises on the phone, strange interference, and much more. I told her, in my opinion, if this was not a case of coincidence (and the timing most strongly suggests it was not!) then maybe someone really was listening in and playing a few mind-games of the MIB variety.

I haven't heard the recording myself, but when the show airs, listen carefully (as I will!) and see what you make of it!

Listing the MIB

Patrick Huyghe of Anomalist Books has alerted me to this: a lengthy listing of MIB reports prepared for the Magonia Blog by Gareth Medway. It doesn't, of course, include every MIB story that has appeared in-print, but it does offer the MIB researcher a good selection of data, much dating back decades.

Red Dirt Report Review

At Red Dirt Report, Andrew W. Griffin reviews The Real Men in Black. Describing the book as "very creepy," he says: "Redfern, an authority on conspiracies, high weirdness and the paranormal, offers up this spooky-and-interesting information in an easy-to-read and conversational way."

And here's the link to the complete review.

New Dawn Q&A

A couple of months ago, the Australian magazine New Dawn did an interview with me for the print-edition of their magazine on my The Real Men in Black.

But, the interview has now been posted online at their website, and you can find it right here.

As I note in the interview: "My personal conclusion is that there are at least two things going on. There are the government-originated MIB, and there are the weirder MIB. As for the former, I prove in the book that some can be traced back to official agencies of at least several governments. As for those stranger MIB, my personal view is that they are paranormal. Of course, much of this depends on how we define the paranormal! My personal view is that the MIB may be the inhabitants of multi-dimensions or extra-dimensions that co-exist with ours, and whose role it is to keep us away from the truth about not just UFOs, but a whole range of strange phenomena too. But as for why, that is the big question still eluding us!"

The Real Men in Black in Fate

The new issue of Fate magazine includes an excellent, 4-page review of The Real Men in Black from Jerome Clark.

Jerry describes the book as being "breezily written" and spends a great deal of time discussing Joshua P. Warren's theories in its pages concerning the theory that the MIB may be time travelers.

You can find out more about Fate magazine right here.

Info Ovni & The MIB

Over at Info Ovni, you can find a new Q&A with me about my thoughts on the Men in Black. Here's the link...

Poll Results on MIB Origins

Well, the poll results relative to my question posed here - namely, who or what are the Men in Black? - are in. And those same results make for interesting reading.

They are as follows:

Government agents: 26 percent.
Aliens: 19 percent.
Paranormal Creatures: 38 percent.
Hoaxing and Misidentification: 15 per cent.

As for the remaining 2 percent? Well, I have no idea where they went to at all! Confiscated by the MIB, maybe?

But, that most people view the MIB phenomenon as being real, albeit of an other-world nature (whether alien or paranormal) is intriguing, and a conclusion with which I agree.

Of course, that more than a quarter of all those who voted concluded that the phenomenon has its origins in the world of government is notable too, given the fact that - as I note in my The Real Men in Black book - there are clearly two sides to the MIB. There are ours and then there is..."something else."

But, precisely what that "something else" may be is a matter of ongoing debate.

Many thanks to all those who voted!

The Real Men in Black in New Dawn Magazine

The new issue ("Special Issue 17", as it's listed) of Australia's New Dawn magazine includes an extensive, 3,600-word, 5-page interview with me about my The Real Men in Black book.

In what turned out to be a lengthy Q&A, we covered such issues as (A) the early 1950s experiences of Albert Bender; (B) the connections between the MIB and the glowing-eyed Mothman of Point Pleasant, West Virginia; (C) the MIB research of John Keel; (D) the groundbreaking work of Brad Steiger; (E) government files on the Men in Black; (F) the MIB caught on camera in 1968 by researcher Timothy Green Beckley; (G) the fascinating MIB-themed experience of Fortean author Colin Bennett; (H) the links between MIB encounters and alien abductions (with an emphasis on the disturbing experiences of researcher, author and good friend, Marie D. Jones), and (I) the intriguing theory that the MIB might be time-travelers!

New Dawn is an excellent publication that, if you haven't seen it already, you really should!

Tonight, I'll be on the Cosmic Particles With Dr. Meg show talking about The Real Men in Black. Here's the link to the show.

Polling The MIB

As you'll see on the right of this page, just underneath the main banner, I have added a "Poll" section to the blog. Each month (for 30 days), I'll have a new question which - if people click on it and offer their opinions - will hopefully provide some understanding of how the community views certain aspects of the MIB phenomenon. Let me know your views!

The Real MIB on Radio Misterioso

On Sunday night I was interviewed live for 2-hours by Greg Bishop on his Radio Misterioso show on my latest book, The Real Men in Black. Aliens, time-travelers, Tulpas, demonology, government agents and much more were all ripe for discussion! For those who may have missed the show and want to hear it, it's now archived and available online. Here's the link.

MAJIC EYES ONLY and the Men in Black

When it comes to the mysterious Men in Black, there is one area of the subject that is seldom discussed - namely their deep and longlasting links to the crashed UFO phenomenon.

But, the more we look, the more we find evidence of witnesses to UFO crash events who have been intimidated, threatened and silenced by these dark-suited characters.

And a very good source for such MIB-themed UFO Crash-Retrieval data is Ryan Wood's book, MAJIC EYES ONLY: Earth's Encounters With Extraterrestrial Technology.

Wood's title includes a large body of fascinating data that strongly suggests the MIB have played significant roles in certain prominent cases of UFO crash/retrieval.

Wood cites, for example, the apparent confiscation by "the Government" of materials and evidence relative to the famous story of a UFO crash in 1897 at Aurora, Texas.

Men in Black and sophisticated surveillance of UFO eyewitnesses are also integral aspects of the reported UFO crash at Maury Island, Tacoma in June 1947 - which is the subject of a chapter in MAJIC EYES ONLY.

"Leave it well alone" were the words spoken by a sinister military officer to a former employee of the British Ministry of Defense when that same former employee went looking for data on a UFO crash - and the subsequent recovery of a number of non-human bodies - that is said to have occurred near the old East-West German border in 1962, as Wood reveals.

MAJIC EYES ONLY also includes a 6-page chapter on the crash of an aerial craft of unknown origin in the British Isles in early 1964. The witness - Harold South - speaks on the record about how he was detained and threatened in the wake of the affair, and how he came to be placed under apparent secret surveillance by the British military, when he elected to discuss with the UFO research community the bizarre events in which he was implicated.

The crash of a UFO at Kecksburg, Pennsylvania in December 1965 is well known within the field of Ufology. Notably, as MAJIC EYES ONLY makes very clear, the Kecksburg event also has a quasi-MIB angle to it. John Murphy - of the local WHJB Radio - found himself on the receiving end of a visit from certain "government men" that confiscated priceless audio-recordings of witness testimony to the event, clearly indicating that something very strange occurred at Kecksburg - an event that is still shrouded in secrecy to this day.

Wood also cites an account that surfaced from legendary UFO crash/retrieval investigator Leonard Stringfield, who uncovered shocking data on the discovery of a number of seemingly alien bodies on ranch land in Western Kentucky in 1987. In this case, Wood notes, the rancher had the "fear of God" put in him by highly-intimidating military personnel.

And, needless to say, the list goes on and on. In other words, as Ryan Wood's MAJIC EYES ONLY makes clear, if you have been witness to the crash and retrieval of some form of advanced craft of unknown origin, you too may one day be the recipient of a visit from the dreaded Men in Black.

You have been warned...

Check out Ryan Wood's book, MAJIC EYES ONLY: Earth's Encounters with Extraterrestrial Technology, which is the definitive guide to UFO events of the crashed kind.

And here's the publisher's information on Ryan Wood's book, which, for crashed UFOs devotees, makes for essential reading:

MAJIC EYES ONLY is the most authoritative and comprehensive chronicle ever published on the subject of worldwide UFO crashes and subsequent military retrievals from 1897 to the present. The author guides the reader through 74 UFO crash incidents supported by compelling evidence in the form of official documents, eyewitnesses and in some cases physical evidence.

Since 1984, multiple sources have leaked, revealed or discovered some 3,500 pages of UFO documents, hundreds classified Top Secret and linked to Majestic-12. These MJ-12 documents, coupled with the Leonard Stringfield data and strong investigations by other case experts, provide a powerful core of UFO crash incidents.

The idea that major governments have covered up the true nature of the UFO phenomenon for more than half a century through unprecedented secrecy, deception and intimidation strikes many reasonable citizens as preposterous. Yet, this book provides a wealth of evidence, including declassified and leaked government documents and credible eyewitness testimony, that supports the uncomfortable truth of this "preposterous" notion.

Majic Eyes Only is the Top Secret security classification for overwhelming proof of the most deeply held secret on the planet: we are not alone in the universe. Furthermore, several major governments have captured and exploited both extraterrestrial spacecraft and living aliens, for purposes that may sometimes defy understanding but which undoubtedly include the relentless quest for military supremacy and the preservation of society's established power structures.

On March 5, 1942 Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall created an inflection point in history by issuing a Top Secret memorandum to President Roosevelt that inaugurated one of the most secret enterprises the world has ever seen: the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit (IPU). The existence of the IPU is not speculation; it has been acknowledged in several Freedom of Information Act requests. It was within the IPU that re-investigation of the 1897 Aurora, Texas UFO crash retrieval began, along with investigation of two UFO crashes that occurred in February 1942, one in the mountains of San Bernardino, California, and the other just off the Southern California coast - all of this years before Roswell.

MAJIC EYES ONLY is a landmark synthesis and review of every credible UFO crash retrieval event uncovered worldwide to date. Assembling data from his own research and numerous other investigators, including crash retrieval pioneer Leonard Stringfield, the author presents 74 UFO crashes from 1897 to the present, supported by compelling evidence in the form of official documents, eyewitnesses and in some cases physical evidence. Incidents do vary in quality, evidence, and therefore authenticity. However, any reader who starts from a neutral position will find, by the end of this book, that there is sufficient evidence to conclude that: 1) UFOs have crashed on earth, 2) governments have recovered and exploited these alien technology gifts and 3) most disturbing to a democratic free society, the "alien secret" is more important than constitutional or individual rights.

Neil Arnold - Reviewing TRMIB

Neil Arnold (pictured with me at the Center for Fortean Zoology's Weird Weekend in August 2009), author of such books as Monster!; The Mystery Animals of the British Isles: Kent; and Paranormal London - among others - reviews The Real Men in Black. In part, Neil says TRMIB is "...a fantastic book that breaks the mould." And here's where you can find the full review.

Killers on the Moor and MIB

If you're familiar with the books of Center for Fortean Zoology Director Jon Downes (and, if you aren't, you really should be!), you'll know that in a number of his books, Jon references a disturbing series of animal mutilations (specifically of ponies) that occurred on the mysterious wilds of Dartmoor, England in 1977.

And, it's a case that I touch upon too, in my latest book, The Real Men in Black. The reason: a weird spate of telephone interference (a classic facet of MIB phenomena) that hit certain players in the saga.

Well, I'm very pleased to say that a new book has just surfaced that addresses this very case, as well as the wider, worldwide animal mutilation puzzle.

Published by Book Guild Ltd, its title is Killers on the Moor: The Case of the Dartmoor Ponies and Beyond and is written by a guy named Mike Freebury, who - in one of those synchronistic events - happens to hail from my home-town of Walsall, England. And, it's a big book too: it's a hardcover production running at 400-pages.

As soon as I've read the book, I'll be reviewing it right here.

Here's the Amazon link to the book, and here's the description from the publisher:

"On Easter Monday 1977, a man and his family were enjoying a walk on Dartmoor in south-west England. As they approached a small remote valley below White Tor they were horrified to come upon the twisted bodies of four Dartmoor ponies. The ponies' necks and backs appeared to have been broken in what must have been a very violent attack.

"Worse was to come, when more dead ponies were found only a hundred yards away. In total fifteen animals were found dead and mutilated. The police and the RSPCA were called in, but despite detailed investigations were unable to give convincing accounts of what might have happened to the animals.

"Mike Freebury became interested in the case due to press coverage in 2000. He was to discover that horrific unexplained animal deaths and mutilations have been occurring all over the world for many years. As he became more fascinated by the phenomenon, and began to investigate incidents for himself, he somewhat reluctantly came to a startling conclusion. The mutilations appear to be a sampling programme by an extraterrestrial intelligence, and evidence is being systematically covered up and denied by government departments worldwide.

"Mike Freebury was born and brought up near Birmingham. He has enjoyed a career in advertising, construction and then manufacturing and is now finance manager for one of the oldest firms in the West Midlands.

"Mike is currently operations director of the Animal Pathology Field Unit (APFU), investigating animal mutilation cases throughout the UK and abroad. Mike and his wife Jill still live in Walsall, West Midlands and have two grown-up daughters."

There's a new review (at The Occult Section website) of my latest book, The Real Men in Black, about which the reviewer says:

"If you’re interested in the Men in Black phenomenon and want a thorough and interesting history, then this is the book for you. Well-written, well-researched and with lots of personal accounts from investigators and civilians alike, it’s a great book to add to your library of the paranormal."

MIB Origins

There's a tendency amongst many within Ufology to assume or conclude that the Men in Black surfaced when the modern era of Flying Saucers began in the summer of 1947. Maybe not. While reports of the MIB have certainly dramatically increased over the course of the last 60-years, there's evidence to suggest the phenomenon may be far, far older than most imagine - as my latest post at Mysterious Universe demonstrates...

Alien UFO Truth Review

The Real Men in Black is reviewed at Alien UFO Truth.

In part, the reviewer states:

"I read this book and could hardly lay it down. I feel very sure that once you read this book you will look at the whole 'Men in Black' thing much differently. Nick’s book answers many, many questions. It also brings up more. But it leaves very little room for doubt that there is much more than meets the eye going on!"

Micah Hanks Review

Micah Hanks (pictured) reviews The Real Men in Black at his Gralien Report site, and says of the book: "...whether it be the sheer terror these strangers sometimes invoke, or the seldom incidents of hilarity that sometimes ensue following the appearance of weirdos too strange to understand, there is something for everyone bold enough to grab a copy of this latest offering from Nick Redfern. But be forewarned… should you investigate too deeply into the MIB mystery, you may just have to expect a knock at your door in the coming weeks, perhaps from a stranger clad in black who you’d rather not have to meet at all!"

And you can find the complete review right here.

Marie Jones and the MIB

One of the many people I interviewed for my The Real Men in Black was Marie D. Jones, the author of such acclaimed titles as PSIence; 2013; and (with co-author, Larry Flaxman) The Resonance Key; and 11:11 - The Time Prompt Phenomenon.

And, I'm pleased to say that Marie has just been interviewed for Whitley Strieber's Dreamland show on her very own MIB experience, which is profoundly linked to the alien-abduction phenomenon.

Here's the link to the relevant episode.

MIB Paranoia & Obsessions

One of the more unsettling aspects of the Men in Black issue is that those who become exposed to the phenomenon often find themselves plunged into a mind-set filled with deep paranoia - and occasionally overwhelming obsession, too.

And it's a situation that has been known to affect not just witnesses to the MIB, but also those who investigate and research the subject - as my latest post at Mysterious Universe demonstrates.

Star Drive Review

Kim Burrafato reviews The Real Men in Black at Stardrive.org.

In part, Kim says of the MIB mystery: "Redfern does an admirable job of covering this bizarre and controversial landscape in The Real Men in Black. If you read one book on the MIB phenomenon, this is the book to read, although don't expect to be any less perplexed by the end of the book, than you were at the beginning."

Aliens The Truth: Reviewing MIB

At Aliensthetruth.com, Chris Augustin reviews my The Real Men in Black book and says:

"The Men in Black have always been a subject I've tended to shy away from. Not due to fear like some would expect. It's just been one of those areas of the UFO/paranormal phenomenon that didn't warrant further study. Well past beliefs be damned, after reading this book, I've learned there's plenty to be explored. I've always known that some MIB reports were probably government/military personnel following up on UFO sightings. They would typically get a bad reputation given some of their interactions, such as the witness silencing that occurred during the Roswell crash era. However, it's the non-government interactions that are truly interesting. Time travelers? Demonic entities? ETs? Something else? These are all the questions and theories this book explores that truly leaves you wanting to learn more. The book is very well written, fast paced and definitely prompted me to explore the subject matter further."

Linda Godfrey Reviews MIB

Linda Godfrey - the author of such acclaimed titles as The Beast of Bray Road; Hunting the American Werewolf; and The Michigan Dogman - reviews my The Real Men in Black book. Here it is:

Men in black, mysterious figures in black suits that pop up at UFO sighting scenes like mushrooms after a spring rain, have become so solidly entrenched in pop culture that very popular – and imaginative – movies have been made about them. Nick Redfern’s new book tracks their history from the days when MIB were esoteric lore known only to UFO geeks, to today’s guys with cool shades who show up on your local theater screen. The real Men in Black are far more sinister than I had guessed.

The book was especially persuasive to me personally since it includes the experiences of colleagues I’ve come to know and trust over the years including Brad Steiger, Marie D. Jones and Raven Meindel. The terror they and many others experienced was subtle – compared to sightings of, say, Bigfoot or werewolves -- yet very traumatic.

Sporting black suits and hats some have compared to those of the Blues Brothers, Men in Black started showing their pale and unexpressive faces in the middle of the 20th Century, around the same time flying saucers entered the public consciousness. Witnesses and researchers of the UFO phenomenon found themselves threatened and harassed – often in unexplainable ways – by the lurking strangers who usually drove shiny black cars. Scarily, MIB continue these terror tactics to present day, sometimes updating their transportation to black helicopters or other vehicles.

In my book, Strange Wisconsin; More Badger State Weirdness, I reported an incident told me by a farmer in western Wisconsin who was deer hunting with his children when the three saw a UFO rise from a nearby tree top and then shoot off over a field. They were so terrified they decided to forget hunting and just leave, but as they exited the woods they saw a convoy of shiny black pickup trucks heading single file across the field in the same direction the UFO had gone. Just the sight of so many new trucks in the sleepy area was strange enough, but where did they suddenly come from and why would they all take off across someone’s field in mid-November? What was their connection to the silver, discoid craft and how did they know it was there?

Readers will discover similar weird anomalies in every tale in Redfern’s book. And after grounding readers in many frightening examples of the MIB mystery, Redfern spends the second half of the book wrestling with possible explanations for the creepy figures. Redfern notes that strange people clad in black have appeared to those dabbling in occult studies and practices throughout history. If this is true, perhaps the MIB are not connected to aliens from space at all. Redfern explores such disparate possible origins for them as elaborate thought- forms created by human imagination, time cops from far in the future and perfectly human secret agents.

Author and MIB researcher Colin Bennett is quoted extensively in the book, and he comes to the conclusion that the MIB entities appear to “eat” human energy generated by the fear they provoke. This was interesting to me because I have often said the same thing about the unknown, upright canines I have studied and written about for the past 19 years. Are strange creatures, MIB, UFOs and other scary phenomena part of some massive, unknown entity that exists just one step above us on the psychic food chain? Perhaps unreality bites.

Whatever MIB may be, Redfern and the many experts he consults agree they are not desirable company. There is one simple weapon that seems to work against them but I won’t give that away here. I’ll just say that to be forewarned is to be fore-armed, and that you will want to read this book to know what to do before the MIB come calling on you.

Commenting on the MIB

Over at the New Page Books blog, you can find a new post from me on my new The Real Men in Black book.

The MIB and Strange Creatures

Although my newly-published book, The Real Men in Black, focuses to a significant degree on the MIB and UFOs (as, of course, you would expect!), it also demonstrates the undeniable link between the mysterious MIB and Cryptozoology.

As The Real Men in Black demonstrates, the Loch Ness Monster, the Chupacabra, and perhaps even the highly curious "Thunderbird Photograph" have attracted the attention of the MIB. And, in a real scoop, I detail in my book the very creepy MIB encounter of legendary cryptozoologist, Loren Coleman himself.

But, it's perhaps the MIB link to Point Pleasant's infamous winged entity, Mothman, that is most notable of all...

The Real MIB, Knocking On Your Door Now...

For decades - or perhaps even for centuries, some firmly believe - the infamous Men in Black have been elusive, predatory, fear-inducing figures that have hovered with disturbing regularity upon the enigmatic fringes of the subject of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs), coldly nurturing, and carefully weaving, their very own unique brand of horror and intimidation of a definitively other-world variety.

The preferred tools of terror of the MIB are outright menace, far less than thinly-veiled threats, and overwhelming, emotionless intimidation. And they are relentless when it comes to following their one and only agenda - that is, to forever silence witnesses to, and investigators of, UFO encounters. Unfortunately, it has to be admitted, they have been highly successful in achieving their unsettling goal, too.

Indeed, and without any shadow of doubt whatsoever, the long and winding history of UFO studies is absolutely littered with fraught, frightened and emotionally-shattered figures that have been forever menaced into silence by the Men in Black, and who, as a result, have firmly distanced themselves from the UFO controversy, vowing never, ever to return to the fold.

Like true vampires from some strange, outer edge, the painfully-thin, white-faced and sunken-cheeked Men in Black appear from the murky darkness; they then roam the countryside provoking carnage, chaos, paranoia and fear in their notorious wake, before duly returning to that same shrouded realm of unsettling weirdness from which they originally oozed forth.

Very often reported traveling in groups of three, this definitive trinity of evil seemingly has the incredible ability to appear and vanish at will, and is often seen – in the United States - driving 1950s-style black Cadillac’s, and - in the British Isles - 1960s-era black Jaguar’s, both of which are almost always described as looking curiously brand new.

Despite the passing of the decades, and of the many and varied changes in fashions, the preferred mode of dress of these bone-chilling characters never, ever alters in the slightest, at all: it always consists of a well-preserved black suit, a black Fedora- or Homburg-style hat, black sunglasses, a black necktie, black socks and shoes, and a crisp, shining white shirt. Very little wonder, therefore, that they have been given the wholly notorious name with which they are, today, most famously – or perhaps infamously - associated.

But who, or far more likely, what, exactly, are the Men in Black? In the 1997 blockbuster movie, Men in Black and in its 2002 sequel, that starred Hollywood crowd-pullers Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, the MIB were firmly, and highly entertainingly, portrayed as being the secret-agents of a Top Secret, covert arm of the U.S. Government, whose sole role it is to hide from the general public the dark truth about a huge and intricate alien presence on the Earth. But, how much truth is there to the mega-bucks movie that spawned so much interest in these bizarre figures?

While some MIB are, without doubt, the all-seeing eyes of clandestine departments of at least several governments – including both the United States and the United Kingdom - the vast majority of these curious characters appear to be of a very different breed altogether. According to numerous, fantastic witness testimony and countless case-studies secured since the early years of the 1950s, the real MIB may very possibly be alien entities themselves, carefully and secretly working to ensure that we never successfully uncover the sensational truth about their presence, or the long-term goal of their strange and unearthly agenda, upon our very own planet.

On the other hand, however, some students of MIB history, lore and legend suggest that these non-human creatures are utterly occult-based, supernatural beings that originate in, inhabit, and with disturbing regularity surface from, strange and enigmatic netherworlds very different to that of our own, personal 3-D reality. On a very similar path, a variety of individuals suspect strongly that the real Men in Black are nothing less than definitive demons – the literal, deceptive minions of none other than the lord of the underworld: Satan himself.

The intriguing fact that many of those that have been cursed by visits from the Men in Black have dabbled in occultism, with Ouija-Boards, and in devil-worship, is perceived as further evidence by some that the MIB may have origins that are far, far removed from the enigma-filled world of outer-space and highly-advanced extraterrestrials from the stars.

Meanwhile, there are those investigators of the UFO phenomenon who have put forth a truly fascinating, unique and near-revolutionary theory that has nothing whatsoever to do with aliens, flying saucers, or even the realm of the occult. It is a definitively jaw-dropping theory that posits the Men in Black may, incredibly, be time-travelers from humankind’s far-flung future. Their role, it has been suggested, may be to ensure that we remain forever in the dark about the shocking facts of what is really afoot: namely, that our “aliens” are actually us, albeit from a time centuries, or even thousands of years, from now.

Whatever their point – or points – of origin, however, there is one thing that we can say with complete confidence and certainty about the Men in Black: they are, most assuredly, amongst us, and there is absolutely nothing positive, warm or welcoming about their presence at all.

And, if your personal, particular areas of fascination are those relative to such conundrums as Flying Saucers, alien abductions, close encounters, the Roswell UFO crash of 1947, Area 51, UFOs, and a myriad of other, attendant puzzles, then that trio of mysterious, black-garbed men may very well one day be paying you a visit, too.

If, late on some dark, thunderous and chilled night, you are awoken from an uneasy slumber by a slow, deliberate and pounding knocking on your front-door, no matter how tempted you may be, do not open it – that is, unless you wish to disastrously allow into your life one of the most terrifying, soulless and definitively macabre creatures that has ever been unleashed upon us, the Human Race. Remember you have been duly warned. Beware, always, of the real Men in Black…

MIB Terror!

Although my own book on the mysterious MIB, The Real Men in Black, is not published until June, a year or more ago I wrote an Introduction for a new edition of Gray Barker's classic book MIB: The Secret Terror Among Us. Slightly re-worded in its title, the new edition is now available as Men in Black: The Secret Terror.

Here's the product information on the book:

"Men in Black: The Secret Terror Among Us" was the last major work by West Virginia author Gray Barker, a legendary figure in the history of ufology. In many respects, this is the sequel to his earlier bestsellers "They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers" (a chronicle of the harassment faced by early UFO researchers) and "The Silver Bridge" (Barker's on-the-scene investigation of the Mothman events of the 1960s). Since Barker died a year after the release of "MIB: Secret Terror," it was not widely distributed. As such, it became enormously rare and expensive. Now, for the first time, it is being made available to the general public.

Barker was the first researcher to coin the term "Men in Black” in the 1950s. Along with John Keel, author of "The Mothman Prophecies," Barker was responsible for making the subject famous. As a publisher and author, Barker popularized several classic parapolitical tales, such as the Flatwoods Monster, the Roswell Incident, the Philadelphia Experiment, and the Maury Island Affair. "MIB: Secret Terror" is thus an undiscovered gem for folklorists, UFO buffs, Forteans, cryptozoologists, and conspiracy theorists alike - the grand, final statement from a master of many genres.

Within these pages, Barker ties together many of the shadowy threads exposed during his years as editor of "Saucer News" and Saucerian Press. Penned after the release of top-secret CIA and FBI files in the late 1970s, it constitutes a seasoned overview of the issues involved. In this taught, sober, and enlightening tale, the reader can sense what was really happening behind the scenes of ufology in West Virginia, Ohio, and other parts of the country. Due to the inherent penalties for revealing national security secrets (which the MIB seemed determined to prevent), this work is filled with hidden, symbolic clues. For those who can read between the lines, this may be Barker's best book ever.

This special 2011 edition features new introductions by noted paranormal researchers Andy Colvin, Adam Gorightly, Allen Greenfield, and Nick Redfern, as well as original passages from legendary ufologists John Keel and Jim Moseley.

"My ufological hero... Deserves to be read by one and all..." -Greg Bishop, editor of "The Excluded Middle"

"Without Gray there would be no Men in Black mystery..." - Nick Redfern, author of "Memoirs of a Monster Hunter" and "On the Trail of the Saucer Spies"

"Complex and intelligent... Be very careful..." -John Keel, author of "The Mothman Prophecies" and "The Eighth Tower"

"A breath of fresh air... Well written, sometimes humorous, always entertaining. Pivotal in defining the flying saucer mythos..." - Adam Gorightly, author of "Shadow Over Santa Susana: Black Magic, Mind Control & the Manson Family Mythos"

"One of the leading lights of classic, four-dimensional saucering..." -Jim Moseley, author of "Shockingly Close to the Truth: Confessions of a Grave-Robbing Ufologist"

"Captures the emotional mood, gothic imagery, and sheer, dreamlike weirdness of the Men in Black even better than 'The Mothman Prophecies'" -Allen Greenfield, author "Secret Cipher of the UFOnauts" and "Secret Rituals of the Men in Black"

"Transcendent, meaningful, and artistic..." - Andy Colvin, author "The Mothman's Photographer" and "The Mothman Speaks"
